New in IT Portal 4.6.41 · Q4 2026
Overview
Every MSP has been here. A technician who normally looks after a handful of clients is heading on site to a new one tomorrow. Or the help desk is short-staffed this week and a few restricted techs need to pitch in across every company. So someone opens the user's settings, gives them more access, and makes a mental note to take it away again on Friday.
That mental note is where things go wrong. Extra access that was meant for a day quietly becomes permanent, and nobody notices until an audit, or worse.
IT Portal 4.6.41 fixes this with temporary permissions. When you grant extra access, you set an expiry date. When that date arrives, IT Portal puts the user's access back exactly as it was, all on its own.
How it works
There are two ways to grant temporary access, and both work the same way: make the change, tick a box, pick a date.
A temporary change to a user's access. Edit the user, make the change on their Access tab (raise a Restricted User to a full User, widen their company scope, or tick an extra permission), then tick Set temporary permission and choose an expiry date. IT Portal remembers what their access looked like before your change. On the expiry date, the next time they sign in, that original access is restored: their role, their scope, and every permission setting.
A temporary company in a company group. If a technician's access comes from a company group, you can add a company to that group just for a while. Mark the company as temporary, set the expiry date, and save. When the date arrives, the company is removed from the group automatically, and with it the extra access.
Need more time? Change the date. IT Portal keeps the original access on record, so extending the window never turns the temporary access into the new normal. Decided the change should stay? Untick the box and it becomes permanent.
Why it matters
- Least privilege without the busywork. Give people exactly the access they need for exactly as long as they need it, without adding another task to someone's to-do list.
- No more forgotten access. The removal is automatic. Your team no longer has to remember who was given what, and when it should end.
- Exact restore. IT Portal brings back the user's precise previous access level, scope and permissions, not a best guess.
- A clear record. Temporary grants are user changes like any other, so they show up in the admin change log for your audits.
- Answers a real request. This feature came straight from MSPs who were adding and removing access by hand to cover site visits and busy weeks.
Getting started
Temporary permissions are available in IT Portal 4.6.41 (Q4 2026) for administrators:
- For a user, go to Admin Settings → Security → Users, edit the user, and use Set temporary permission on the Access tab.
- For a company group, go to Admin Settings → Groups & Types → Companies, open the group on the Groups tab, and mark the company as temporary with an expiry date.
For step-by-step instructions, timing details and troubleshooting, see the knowledge base article Temporary Permissions - Access That Expires Automatically.
Temporary permissions are one of many improvements in this release. See everything else that is new in the IT Portal 4.6.41 release notes.
Grant the access, set the date, and move on. IT Portal will remember to take it back.
