Microsoft no longer supports Basic Auth in SMTP

Sep 17, 2024

Overview

Microsoft has discontinued basic authentication for SMTP in Microsoft 365 as of September 16th, 2024. IT Portal is providing guidance for both cloud and on-premise users to maintain email functionality.

Cloud Users

We have already distributed configuration details for a Secure SendGrid account. Users can manually configure their portal settings via Admin Settings > SMTP/Notifications with these parameters:

  • SMTP Server: mail.it-portal.com
  • SMTP Port: 26
  • Authentication: Off
  • SSL/TLS: Off

On-Premise Users

As Microsoft has discontinued basic authentication, we recommend finding alternative methods to send emails, such as using an SMTP relay. The team is actively developing OAuth-based authentication support with Microsoft 365 and plans future updates.
